They will try to offer to fix this problem through remote controlling access which you need to help them get by changing setting to allow them in. When you ask them what your ip address is then and even what phone number they just called or your name (all should be on a record if they are calling with warnings on a computer) then they hang up. The call center person states my address and says I have virus they would like to help me get rid of. They claim to be with Microsoft. November 6, 2015, 5:23 pm Yes, this is scam to gain control of your computer (ransomware). I have gotten at least 30 of these calls from an Indian boiler room, from various numbers. The latest iteration is one where they want you to visit a site called stopcontrol.com (presumably on which runs a Java app to take over your system). When you do a whois search of that url, you find that the identity of the owner is buried under at least two layers protection. This screams SCAM, SCAM, SCAM. November 13, 2015, 2:04 am They called again today after not calling for about a year. They say the computer sending them messages and I should go to my computer to fix it. 1st time I told them my husband is a computer geek and he can fix it and I live in Microsoftville where all my neighbors work for Microsoft. I'll get one of them. Frustrated they hung up but called back. So this time I told them Bill Gates was my neighbor and I would have him fix it. They did not know who Bill Gates was! I told them I would take care of the problem my self.They were not happy that I would not go to my computer. The third time they call I tell them they must have the wrong number because I do not own a computer! So they haven't called for about a year or I just didn't answer. March 10, 2016, 5:35 pm I got a call from 190-948-4641. The caller ID said Proficient Food. The caller said I have a virus in my computer. I thanked him for the heads up and I will tell my IT man about it. He instated that he could help me. I told him that I don't know anything about a computer, but if he would give me his number, I would have my IT man call him and they can work out the problem. I stated that at least drug dealers and pimps provide a product that their customer wants. You are stealing from people who don't know better and don't have the money. July 25, 2016, 3:15 pm I was first called by a male, told me he was with my IT department. I told him I did not have an IT dept. He insured me that I did and started to tell me about warnings my computer was sending out. He wanted me to reset my computer settings, etc. I told him no, we argued a bit and he eventually asked me what he should've said differently to get me to comply. We both laughed and I hung up. The second time I was called, a few months later, was by a female. She gave me the same story and I informed her, I don't have a Windows based computer, I have a UNIX based computer. That's partially true, I do have a UNIX-based computer in my home. She was stymied, a few seconds later said she would correct their records and we hung up. August 2, 2016, 3:02 pm Just got yet ANOTHER call from these Indian scammers. This time it was a female, claiming to be from "our" Computer Department, and that we owed money for "service". I told her we have a Geek Squad membership,and then asked 'since when?' She said "Six months ago". I said "no we don't", then pressed the # sign down own the phone for about a good 20 seconds and disconnected the call. About two weeks ago, I did file a complaint with the FTC, on behalf of my elderly parent, whom these scumbags seem to primarily prey upon, due to memory loss issues and lack of technical experience. I thank God every day for the Anti-Phishing and cyber security training I received from my previous employer, which helps me to fend these monsters off. They always think the next call will succeed because many people have fallen for their line and send money thinking it'll save them from a virus attack... which, of course is completely wrong and a waste of their money. The phone company claims they don't have the authority to block these calls. The FTC and the FCC say they have all the authority they need. 'Seems to me the phone companies are complicit, as they continue to allow these crooks to make long-distance international calls using "invalid" phone numbers. Strange that these numbers are blocked from reverse lookup by irate innocent US victims, but not blocked from continued use by the crooks!! Then the Feds say they're helpless to make anything happen without cooperation from the phone companies. So nobody's able to take action and the US public simply had to put up with constant harassment from idiots trying to rip them off!! Disgusting that we have such wimps in charge! It's disturbing to see that others have ID'd them as fake Microsoft people because we received "talking messages" on our computer last night claiming to be from Microsoft regarding a virus on our computer. We had to shut down the computer to get rid of the message and then ran a Norton virus scan that didn't find anything wrong. BEWARE of these creeps!
